Renovating a Historic Craftsman Home in Marin County

Originally built in 1908, this stunning three-story Craftsman home was carefully renovated to enhance its functionality, natural light, and connection to its breathtaking San Francisco Bay views. Rich in period detail, the home’s historic architecture offered warmth and character, yet the original layout no longer supported modern living. The kitchen was dark and closed off, the lower level had low ceilings and minimal daylight, and there was no dedicated parking—design challenges that were thoughtfully resolved through strategic architectural planning and structural improvements.

A new garage was added to significantly improve convenience and accessibility, seamlessly integrated to complement the existing Craftsman façade. The front entry was reimagined with new stairs and a beautifully landscaped garden approach, strengthening curb appeal while creating a gracious arrival experience. The lower level underwent a dramatic transformation, with ceiling heights improved where possible and two bright bedrooms added. French doors open onto a newly constructed expansive deck, extending the living space outdoors. A spacious, light-filled bathroom, dedicated laundry room, and an open stairway visually connecting all three levels reinforce the home’s sense of cohesion and flow.

The kitchen was completely reoriented to capture spectacular water views from the sink and main prep areas, turning everyday tasks into moments of connection with the landscape. Custom cabinetry, improved circulation paths, and a more efficient layout enhance both functionality and entertaining. A partial wall removal between the dining room and stairway opened the interior sightlines, strengthening the relationship between the living and dining spaces while preserving original trim details. Beneath the new garage, a practical mudroom and generous storage areas were incorporated to support an active family lifestyle.

With bright, natural finishes, restored millwork, and carefully selected materials throughout, this renovation balances classic Craftsman character with contemporary livability—resulting in a home that feels refreshed, light-filled, and beautifully adapted for the next century.
